Laser HoLEP is the acronym that refers to the latest and most advanced minimally invasive treatment that exists in the world to treat benign prostate enlargement and that is found in Argentina. HoLEP stands for Holmium Laser Enucleation of the Prostate. Therefore, whenever we refer to Laser HOLEP we will be mentioning the new and revolutionary Holmium Laser for Enucleation of the Prostate.
That is to say, a laser superior to those previously known for its cutting and coagulation capacity that allows to extract the grown tissue of the intact prostate in its entirety for its wavelength of 2200 nanometers. This makes it possible to perform a biopsy on the extracted material, unlike green laser treatments with a wavelength of 532 nanometers (which removes the tissue in parts or vaporizes it). In this way, HoLEP allows analysis of the extracted tissue to rule out or corroborate the presence of cancer.
The prostate is an organ of the male reproductive system located below the bladder and is crossed in the center by the urethra, so that urine leaves the bladder through the prostate.
The prostate has a capsule in its peripheral part that surrounds the enlarged lobes that produce the obstruction, closing the lumen of the initial portion of the urethra as it exits the bladder.
With the HoLEP technique, an endoscope is inserted through the urethra and advanced until the obstruction produced by the enlarged lobes of the prostate that closes the lumen of the urethra is observed.
Advantages of the Laser HOLEP
HoLEP is a treatment that provides immediate relief from the symptoms of an enlarged prostate.
It is a definitive treatment for prostate adenoma. The long-term result is successful. Provides high durability after treatment.
It can treat any prostate regardless of its size, be it small or large. Unlike other types of laser, the HOLEP Laser can treat large prostates. Even those of 300grs. that until now were resolved exclusively with open surgery.
As in open surgery, all the extracted material is analyzed to determine the nature of the prostate growth. But unlike open surgery, it does not require an incision and the probe only needs to be kept for 24 hours.
It only takes 1 day of hospitalization and the procedure requires two to three hours depending on the size of the gland.
Patients can return to normal activity in 48 hours.
After seven days they can resume their sexual life normally.
Unlike other laser techniques, HoLEP has no irritating symptoms when urinating.
The reduction of tissue measured by ultrasound after HoLEP surgery is 80%, while the other laser techniques only reduce the size by 30%.
HoLEP is a technique that offers the advantages of reducing bleeding without the need for transfusions.
Eliminates the complication of transurethral resection syndrome or TUR syndrome, since it uses saline solution.
It allows to operate on patients treated with anticoagulants.
All of this means that this procedure is virtually suitable for all patients who are capable of receivinganesthesia.
Proven results
A study carried out by the European Center of Urology has shown that 92% of the operated patients, after six years were satisfied or very satisfied with the results and only 1.4% had to resort to a reintervention. While in patients treated with the conventional transurethral resection technique, the reoperation rate is 8% at 6 years. This difference is achieved thanks to a more complete removal of the obstructive adenoma achieved by the HOLEP Laser.
It places it above other invasive techniques for its long-term results.
History
Laser Prostatectomy has been presented in various ways since 1994.
This Holmium laser enucleation of the prostate has been performed all over the world since 1996 and was adopted by many medical centers in different countries.
It was brought to our country in mid-2007.
